What are the responsibilities when operating a drone, RC airplane, or RC helicopter?

These obligations are valid in the territory of the Slovak Republic. Laws in other EU countries or the world may differ. Before using a drone outside the territory of the Slovak Republic, familiarize yourself with the laws and obligations of the given country.

Before you buy any remote-controlled (RC) flying model, i.e. not only a drone, but anything that flies, you should know what your obligations are.

1. If you buy an RC drone / airplane / helicopter in the toy category, you don't have to do anything other than enjoy the pleasure of flying. You will recognize a flying RC toy first of all by the price (very low) and secondly by the parameters, i.e. it flies a short distance, it falls more than it flies, the wind will blow it to the neighbor's fence.

2. If you buy an RC drone / airplane / helicopter in a higher category, i.e. not a toy, but a real RC model, then it is important how much your model weighs and whether it HAS or DOES NOT have a camera. If it weighs less than 250g and DOES NOT have a camera, you can fly it as much as you want, you just have to follow the rules (see below).

3. If you buy an RC drone / airplane / helicopter equipped with a camera, then no matter how much it weighs, what its performance is or what type it is, you have a clear obligation to REGISTER. You just have to look at its classification in the table on the Transport Authority website, where you can find all the necessary forms.

General rules for flying an RC drone / airplane / helicopter in the OPEN category

1. the drone weighs less than 25 kg (including fuel, battery, ...), but be careful about the classification in the relevant subcategory;

2. the pilot must keep the model at a safe distance from people and not fly over groups of people;

3. the pilot must always have a direct view of the model, must not fly around the corner of a building, an obstacle, people, etc. so that he cannot see the model directly. The only exception is if he is helped by a second person - an observer.

4. the drone must not ascend to a height of more than 120 meters from the ground during the flight, except in cases of flying over an obstacle;

5. the drone does not transport dangerous cargo and does not drop any objects during the flight;

6. FPV can only be flown with the help of a second person - an observer (point 3.);

7. When operating at night, it is necessary to have a green flashing light activated on the unmanned aircraft.
