Wash is one of the oldest and most important weathering techniques used by all modelers when building models or dioramas of all types and themes. It is used to emphasize recessed details, grooves, angles, panel lines and edges in the relief of the model. Washes naturally flow into the folds and crevices of the surface, creating realistic shadows, depth and a more realistic look.

The advantage of acrylic wash is that it is non-toxic and odorless. It also dries faster than enamel washes, allowing you to complete the weathering process in less time. They are designed to be applied with a fine brush directly from the bottle to correct excessive build-up in one place that can be caused by gravity. The surface is matte after drying and excess wash residues can be removed with water or acrylic thinner.

How to use:
Use a round brush with a fine tip of the appropriate thickness for the size of your model. Shake the bottle well and lightly dip the tip of the brush into the wash (or a mixing palette with your diluted mix). Then spread the wash along the grooves, panel lines and around raised details, or use the capillary effect, where the liquid will spread itself throughout the detail. Then let the wash dry to the touch, which usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes. You can then wipe off the excess wash with a brush or ear stick lightly dipped in water or acrylic thinner. Make sure the surface is semi-gloss or glossy so that the wash spreads properly and can be easily removed if necessary. The surface must not be matte!
